Call to Action

I am on a mission and want my message to reach everyone connected with the dance world because I believe it is time for a change. I am looking to connect with performers, artistic directors of pre-professional colleges and dance companies, choreographers, physical therapists, leads for dance science degree courses, leads for Dance BA (Hons) degree courses and dancers who want to become counsellors or psychotherapists. Film theatre and TV producers and directors. Sorry if I have missed out any other interested parties.

I had a career in ballet, musical theatre, film and TV and performed at the highest level for ten years. I am now a psychotherapist with an MA in Psychotherapy & Healing Practice (Middlesex University) offering my therapy services to dancers and the general public across the world.

I am looking to collaborate in a number of areas:

  1. Mental and physical health parity and a proactive approach to mental health issues in colleges and dance companies. I offer talks to colleges (pre-profession) and dance companies regarding mental health self-care for dancers. My book on this subject will be out in 2019.
  2. Collaboration with dance/film/TV/theatre producers/directors as the production’s mental health advisor.
  3. Collaboration with colleges and universities on a number of my research ideas regarding dancers’ mental health.
  4. Collaboration with colleges and universities on 1st and masters degree on setting up courses or modules on counselling for dancers.

My mission for 2019 is to continue to spread the word that the provision of mental health resources should be equal to those of physical health, in both a proactive and reactive way. Dance companies and pre-professional colleges spend large amounts of money on performance psychology, physical therapists and gym machinery, not only for injury rehabilitation (reactive) but also for physical maintenance and injury prevention (proactive). These organisations are very proud of what they have done on the physical performance side as can be seen by the number of social media and YouTube videos they have posted.

But what of proper mental health care for more serious issues I hear you all asking. The results of my research have shown that some organisations have counsellors on site or refer students/professional dancers to outside sources, which the company pay for, usually about 6 sessions.

Others “suggest” that their students/dancers find a therapist, leaving it up to the individual to find one and pay for therapy. Only one dance company in the UK shows a counsellor on their staff, whilst others show “performance” or “sports” psychologists on their websites, such psychologists are not qualified to deal with mental health issues. I will explain the differences between psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors in a separate article.

The experience of investigating attitudes towards, and availability of, good mental health care in the dance world has left me frustrated but very determined to change the situation. A comment from the clinical head of a ballet company about my pointed questions at a recent dance conference summed the situation up very concisely “it’s Terry beating his drum again”.

I am now beginning to understand how women in general feel about equality. Here in the UK they won the right to vote 100 years ago but there is still no true equality for them in many areas, the same attitude can be seen in the divide between physical and mental health parity in general but I am concentrating on this in particular regard to dance.

My call out is also for dancers approaching retirement, for whatever reason, to contact me if they are interested in becoming a psychotherapist or counsellor to build up the number of mental health therapists who have originated from the dance world. Which then leads me on to call for colleges and universities to create degree courses specifically related to counselling for dancers as mentioned above.
